Hope to give you an equal amount of useful and useless information on this page.
First bit of useful information: The Irish for Sligo is Sligeach which means Shelly River and the first reference to the name is recorded in 537 when the battle of Sligeach was fought between the forces of Connaught and those of the North, the North forces were victorious and the then king of Connaught, Eoghen Bel, was slain. There is no mention of a town or village at the time of the battle and the name refers to the river or channel where the fight took place, the first record of an occupied site by the name in any of the ancient Annals is not recorded until 1242.
If you are a romantic, which I believe myself to be, you can follow Colonel Wood-Martins belief and place Ptolemy's city of Nagata on the current site of Sligo. Ptolemy's map is believed to have being compiled circa 150 AD.

Reflections
Have you every asked yourself a question
and then wondered why
you asked it in the first place
To find the answer
just turn around and
look beyond the
shoulder of your mind.

He has an awful memory at times
so I have

Fading light-Sunset-Night
In fading light, past sunset
I find comfort,
ti's easier to see it all
when there is less in sight.
